How the score is calculated
The DISE score is the sum, over the four VOTE levels, of the degree of collapse (0 none, 1 partial, 2 complete) multiplied by a configuration-specific severity weight.
Score A = (Vdegree × Vconfiguration) + Ovalue + Tvalue + (Edegree × Econfiguration)
| Level | Rule | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Velum | degree × 1 anteroposterior, 2 lateral, 3 concentric | 0–6 |
| Oropharynx | lateral only: fixed values 0, 4 (partial), 6 (complete) | 0–6 |
| Tongue base | recoded value 0, 2 (partial), 3 (complete) | 0–3 |
| Epiglottis | degree × 2 anteroposterior or floppy, 3 lateral | 0–6 |
Score B differs only at the tongue base: the value (2 or 3) is multiplied by a tissue factor of 1 for lymphoid (lingual tonsil hypertrophy) and 2 for muscular (hypotonic or hypertrophic) collapse, so that score B exceeds score A by 2 or 3 points in muscular collapse and equals it otherwise. When the tongue base collapses and the tissue type is unknown, score B cannot be computed.
Worked example: V2c O2 T1 E0 = (2 × 3) + 6 + 2 + 0 = 14 points (score A), or 16 points (score B) if the tongue-base collapse is muscular.
